Artificial intelligence and the Future of Medicine

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Is Artificial Intelligence going to put us doctors out of business? All of those years in Med school for nothing? These questions have been continuously plaguing the thoughts of both the doctors and students alike, ever since the concept of AI was introduced across the globe. Fortunately for us, Dr. Anjum Maqbool Ahmed, the Global Chief Medical Officer at AGFA HealthCare and a leading figure for innovation strategy for Artificial intelligence, was willing to put these questions to rest and shed some light onto the future of Medicine with AI in the seminar,’’ Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Medicine’’ which was held on 12th May, 2022.
With the beautiful recitation from the Holy Quran performed, Dr. Anjum began his PowerPoint presentation, centering the first view slides on the foundations of A.I and its applications. He then went on to explain the bigger picture i.e. how A.I can be used to improve the scope of medicine. Dr. Anjum elaborated this by familiarizing the audience with the concept of precision health, the idea that your physician can provide a personalized type of treatment to you with the help of AI.
Dr. Anjum continued his presentation, laying emphasis on clinical relevance associated with Artificial Intelligence by discussing a few examples with the crowd. He shared with the audience on how A.I was able to help diagnose Tuberculosis (TB) in the patients appropriately by conversing about a case in the UAE where he and his team were called upon to create an algorithm which would provide a more efficient diagnoses, in which the doctors wouldn’t be required to be physically present, thereby reducing not only the workload but the costs as well. This proved quite beneficial as previously foreign workers from UAE were being deported due to false positives.
Dr. Anjum then also went on to discuss a case in the UK where an algorithm was built to upgrade the findings on Lung Cancer diagnoses, as earlier detections led to a lower mortality rate. This algorithm not only detects nodules (abnormal tissue growth in lungs) but also provides precise measurements for it, which can help shift the stage to an earlier lung cancer diagnoses. He pointed out another case, the use of A.I in breast imaging in order to accurately identify breast lesions, categorize them and estimate the risk of breast cancer in patients while also preventing any misdiagnoses.
Finally, Dr. Anjum concluded his presentation by assuring the audience that despite the rapidly changing environment concerning medicine, there will always be a need for physicians and diagnosticians to decipher and implement those algorithms .Yasir Niazi, the managing director of Islamabad Medical and Dental College (IMDC) and Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital (ANTH), added on that in order to keep up with the ever changing times, physicians and healthcare workers will continuously have to equip themselves with the latest in the field and innovate, as surely...innovation is the key to success.
