Journey to UK
The 3rd seminar organized by the Career Development Office (CDO), “Journey to the UK” by Dr. Shahid Latif.
The seminar’s execution was successful due to being direct and informative about the application process to the UK. Student was able to familiarize themselves to keypoints such as “how to prepare and plan a long term journey to UK” to “what points to remember in an interview”. The event started in full swing with some great moments and some things to remember.
Dr. Shahid gripped the audience’s attention due to his confident and charismatic presence on stage. Dr. Shahid reflected on his journey to specialization, from an undergrad level and to his current position in NHS, this helped create a connection with the audience very well. The energetic presence on stage made the seminar much more interesting and focused. This also portrayed the caliber of Dr. Shahid in psychiatry by speaking to the audience in depths which kept the listeners captivated.
Furthermore, Dr. Shahid talked about the process of General Medical Council registrations. Along with this Dr. Shahid also mentioned a new scheme to enter the UK without following the PLAB pathway. A completely new concept and pathway was introduced to the audience and was considered as something that only NHS network members would know. This pathway provided a good backup option to those who weren’t successful in their PLAB Pathway.
Towards the conclusion, Dr Shahid shared small intricate details about the application, from an interviewer’s point of view. These were the points unfamiliar to the medical students since due to rigorous studies, such skills becomes out of practice. Dr. Shahid also provided a crash course on how to ace the interviews which will allow students to secure even higher positions in Internal medicine training or Core Surgical training. Lastly, Dr. Shahid emphasized on polishing students CV which is considered as a centerpiece in application process. Individually signifying which areas were deficient and needed urgent improvement and what were the experiences the students needed to add in the applications. It is always great to have a soft reminder from your mentors about the importance of long term planning because a comprehensive CV is very difficult to make in a short period of time.
To summarize, the students learned about the application process, starting from the GMC registration to the interviews for the selection and how to build and polish their CV throughout the process.
